This powerful audio relaxation programme has been designed to help ease the many stress factors accompanying a cancer diagnosis and its treatment. Its soothing words, sounds and imagery give a deep massage for the mind, spirit and body, helping you feel calm and relaxed. It is simple and non-intrusive; and designed to help you to focus the incredible power of your mind to achieve optimum levels of physical relaxation, inner calm and peace.

This classic Relaxation Programme was originally developed by John Donmall-Hicks, a Clinical Hypnotherapist and cancer specialist, for the use of people attending the Cavendish Centre for Cancer Care* in Sheffield, England. The positive feedback he received to the programme encouraged John to make it available to a wider audience, and this version was published by John's company in 2008, under its original name. John says: "The good news is that even in times of deep distress, most people can find comfort...a more relaxed place with a sense of inner peace. This audio programme is designed to help you find that place yourself. Although the programme is geared to the needs of people whose lives are affected by cancer, it can also bring real benefits for anyone affected by stress, tension or anxiety".

John answers questions about the Relaxation Programme

Does the programme use Hypnosis?
Clinical Hypnosis is a form of therapy using what is known as the 'hypnotic trance' to engage the imagination and access the power of the unconscious or inner mind – that part of the mind that is active for you every minute of the day and night, operating all the automatic systems of your body, without you being in any way aware of it.

As with all forms of talking therapy, hypnotherapy is conducted as a co-operative partnership between the client and the therapist. But it can only be therapy when it is a live, face to face meeting of mind and emotion, between client and therapist, in the consulting room. The therapeutic approach is infinitely flexible and it's tuned to the individual needs and wishes of the client.

What is 'hypnotic trance?'
The hypnotic trance is much misunderstood, and there is often mystique surrounding it. It is a changed mental state, but of the kind you experience every day. For example, you experience a changed mental state at Christmas, during sex, or when you become absorbed in a film or a book. I see the 'hypnotic trance' as an intense form of daydream, in which we feel very relaxed and comfortable; we are totally absorbed in our own internal world, our mind is dissociated or disengaged from our immediate surroundings, and focused on the problem or issue we are dealing with.

Is it a substitute for individual therapy?
As the answers above explain, listening to a CD cannot be a substitute for individual therapy. But this CD audio programme, like others in the series, uses my voice in a way that is designed to have a comforting therapeutic effect. I created it to help relieve your stress, reduce inner tension and help you find better ways of coping with a cancer diagnosis and cancer therapy. That's why the series is called 'Therapeutic Voice'. It's also true that the suggestions, music and imagery are used in a way that can have a hypnotic effect, can lead you into a 'daydream' state, and can help you become physically very relaxed and mentally absorbed in your own inner world in a positive and therapeutic way.

Is it safe?
It's perfectly safe. The programme ends with a sequence which brings you slowly and gently out of your daydream and leads you back to your normal focus. Even if for some reason you should be interrupted while listening, you will automatically and quickly regain your normal focus on the realities around you.

But please, just remember that with this CD, and any other of its kind, you must never play it while driving or operating machinery.
